Criminal Justice Working Group Met with Neil Weinstein

The Open-Society Georgia Foundation hosted a meeting of criminal justice working group and Neil Weinstein. The primary aim of the meeting was to discuss upcoming reform of the Code on Administrative Offences of Georgia.

Due to the objections expressed by the Government regarding the transfer of certain Administrative offences into the Criminal Code, the members of the working group considered possibility of bringing criminal procedure guarantees within the Administrative Code.

According to Mr. Weinstein transferring procedural guarantees should not be considered as a viable option since the latter would simply duplicate the criminal procedure. At the same time, applying criminal procedural guarantees to Administrative review procedure (which should speedy by its nature) contains risks making the mechanism lengthy and ineffective.

The Criminal Justice Working group will continue its efforts to advocate for systematic reform of the Code on Administrative Offences.
